Amazon Opens New Call Center in Kentucky

August 22, 2013

While it seems as if most of the call centers that are opening their doors these days have something to do with the Affordable Care Act, there are actually retailers that are growing their workforces in this area as well. Amazon.com is an American success story when talking about online retail. The company is now crafting a Kentucky-centric success story with the announcement of its newest customer service call center inside the Bluegrass state.

Winchester, Ky., is the site for the new facility that measures about 80,000 square feet. The company held a ribbon cutting ceremony alongside high ranking state officials that included Governor Steve Beshear. When talking about the online retailer, there is very little doubt that call centers are quite important to its business model. Unlike competitors like Target or Best Buy, Amazon does not have any brick and mortar locations. That means customers that have questions about a product or who wish to log a complaint can’t ask them face-to-face with a sales associate.

Amazon relies on employees that are stationed around the United States and overseas to help deal with various customer concerns and complaints and this makes them a rather large provider of call center services. These were not a whole lot of details made available about how many people would be working at this particular call center, but the facility will be able to house a fairly large workforce. Amazon has said that this will be a long term and permanent project and that will mean good economic development for the state of Kentucky.

At the ribbon cutting ceremony, Beshear gave a short speech in which he welcomed Amazon into the area, saying, “This is a tremendous day for Kentucky and for Winchester. We’re happy to see Amazon continue to expand its footprint here in the Commonwealth.”
