(Post-Bulletin (Rochester, MN) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Apr. 1--Post-Bulletin, Rochester, Minn., Obituaries AUSTIN -- Rev. Charles L. Sargent, age 66, of Austin, died Monday, March 29, 2010 at the Austin Medical Center.

Charles was born September 18, 1943 in LaCrosse, Wisconsin to Harold and Viola Sargent. He grew up in LaCrosse and graduated from high school. Charles loved music and played accordian and piano with several midwest bands. He then went to Radio School in Minneapolis and worked in Broadcasting for many years. On August 21, 1969 he married Marlene Vatland in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Charles went on to Bible College and Seminary and pastored for 20 years.



Survivors include his wife, Marlene Sargent, Austin; son, Matthew Sargent, England; daughter-in-law, Dana Sargent, and granddaughters, Kathryn and Kayla Sargent, Rolla, Mo.; sisters-in-law, Nancy Sargent, and Grace Sargent, both of LaCrosse, Wis.; nieces, Laura Wateski and Colleen Knoepke, both of LaCrosse, Wis.; and nephews, Danny Sargent, LaCrosse, Wis., and Mark Sargent, Texas.

He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael; brothers, Jim Sargent and Dale Sargent; sister, Marie Sargent; niece, Yvonne Sargent.


Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 3, 2010 at Mayer Funeral Home, with Rev. Curly Werth officiating.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, and also one hour before the service at Mayer Funeral Home on Saturday.

The family has requested that no flowers be sent.

WANAMINGO -- The funeral for Pearl Joranger Rosvold, 93, of Rochester, and formerly of Wanamingo, was at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 20, 2010 at Bethel Lutheran Church, with Pastor Andrew Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Wanamingo Lutheran Cemetery.

Mrs Rosvold, a resident of Maple Manor Healthcare and Rehabilitation died Monday, March 15, 2010 at Maple Manor.

Pearl Muriel Joranger was born March 24, 1916 in Wanamingo, the only child of Andrew and Clara Joranger. On Sept. 28, 1940 she married Olaf M. Rosvold at Wanamingo Lutheran Church.

Pearl enjoyed music all her life, and served as church organist at Wanamingo Lutheran Church. Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lyle, Minnesota, and at Bethel Lutheran Church in Rochester.

She is survived by two daughters, Charlotte (David) Anderson of Adams, and Phyllis Hove of Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Brenda (Terry) Vrieze of Rochester, Scott Anderson of Adams, Rev. Kristen Anderson of St. Cloud, Dawn Hove of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Kent (Linda) Anderson of Adams; and seven great-grandchildren, Garrett Vrieze of Kasson, Colin, Courtney and Brittany Vrieze of Rochester, Katie Anderson of Austin, and Alex and Jacob Anderson of Adams. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Olaf, on Aug. 21, 2000, and a great-grandson, Taylor.

AUSTIN -- Bernard L. "Benny" Ulwelling, age 89, of Austin, died Monday, March 29, 2010 at Sacred Heart Care Center.

Benny was born September 1, 1920 in Johnsburg, Minnesota to Louis and Catherine Ulwelling. The family moved to Austin when he was a teenager. Benny worked at Hormels until enlisting in the Army in 1942. He was in Europe and returned to Camp McCoy, Wisconsin in November 1945. Benny returned to work at Hormels and retired in 1982. On September 16, 1940 he was united in marriage to Vera McGee. They enjoyed traveling to Army reunions and visiting family across the United States.

For many years, Benny enjoyed golf and organized an annual tournament for friends. He was a past member of the VFW and American Legion. Benny enjoyed bowling, golf and playing cards with friends.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Vera, Austin; daughters, Janet (Ken) Ruzek, Brooklyn Park, Judy (Jeff) Lee, Rochester; daughter-in-law, Katie Ulwelling, Austin; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and sister, Leona Walburn, Austin.

Benny was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, and his son, Dan Ulwelling.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m., on Thursday, April 1, 2010 at Mayer Funeral Home with Father Joe Fogal officiating.

Friends may call one hour before the service at Mayer Funeral Home on Thursday.

Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post #91.

The honorary casket bearers will be Benny's grandchildren.

ROCHESTER -- Gerald W. Siewert, 75, of Lubbock, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, March 30, 2010.

He was born February 2, 1935 in Rochester, Minnesota to Albert and Esther Siewert. He married Gloria Nordahl September 6, 1975 in Cresco, Iowa. He worked for 35 years for Woodruff Co. in Rochester, Minn., before moving to Lubbock in 1986. Gerald was an auto mechanic for Budget Tune for 9 years before retiring. He was a Baptist.

Gerald loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His passion was working on cars and helping people in need.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Gloria; nine children, Ray (Marie) Siewert, Dale (Fran) Siewert, Darrell Siewert, David Siewert, Nancy Siewert, Jeff (Peggy) Allen, Jimmy (Pam) Allen, Candy (Chris) Jeffreys, and Rodney (Melissa) Allen; brother, James (Donna) Siewert; sister, Jean (Ivan) Koenig; 20 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be held on Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the Wayne Avenue Baptist Church, with Rev. Terry Kirkpatrick and Rev. Greg Johnson officiating. Interment will follow Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home, 1420 Main Street, Lubbock, Texas, 79401.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

ROCHESTER -- Robert I. "Dubs" Dubbels, 63, of 4972 Red Violet, Dubuque, Iowa, died Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at home.

Services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Rd., Dubuque where friends may greet the family from 2 p.m., until the time of service. Rev. Dianne Christopher will officiate. Interment services will be Monday, April 5, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. at Sumner Presbyterian Cemetery, Fillmore County (near Racine), Minn.

Robert was born Nov. 12, 1946 in Rochester, Minn., the son of Irvin and Ruth (Brown) Dubbels. He graduated from Stewartville High School, Stewartville, Minn., with the class of 1964. He married Marcia King on Dec. 3, 1966.

Robert was employed for 20 years as a truck driver for Miller Logging in Dubuque. He returned to college to earn a degree in computer aided drafting. After his graduation, he was employed at Mi-T-M in Peosta, Iowa until his retirement.

He was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, Dubuque.

Dubs had a generous spirit, and enjoyed volunteering at the Red Cross. He was always willing to help anyone, and spent much time repairing computers for friends.

Survivors include his wife, Marcia of Dubuque; two sons, Eugene (Tammy) Dubbels of Dubuque, and Donald Dubbels of Los Angeles, Calif.; four grandchildren, Stasi, Cana, Harrison, and Steven Dubbels; his mother, Ruth Dubbels of Ozark, Mo.; a sister, Marilyn (Dennis) Johnson of Ozark, Mo.; and a brother, James (Linda) Dubbels of Fresno, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his father, Irvin.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Red Cross.

HAYFIELD -- A funeral mass for Mary Monica Maves will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 5, 2010, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 150 2nd Street NE, with Reverend William Kulas celebrating. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Hayfield, Minn.

Mary Monica Maves, 79, of Hayfield, Minn., died on March 30, 2010, in Rochester, Minn.

Mary Monica Hall was born Aug. 13, 1930, the daughter of Elner and Catherine (Judge) Hall in Stewartville, Minn. Mary graduated from Stewartville High School in 1948. She was united in marriage to Alvin Maves on July 24, 1951, at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Stewartville. In 1954, Mary and her husband started Maves Rest Home, serving the community for 41 years.

Mary was a caregiver, Girl Scout Leader, Cub Scout Leader, member of the Legion Auxiliary for 50 years, active at Sacred Heart Ladies Aid, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Mary enjoyed gardening, canning, fishing and traveling.

Mary is survived by her husband, Alvin Maves, Hayfield, Minn.; children, Patricia Maves, Rochester, Minn.; Alan (Cindy) Maves, Rochester, Minn.; Sally (Bill) Decker, Maple Grove, Minn.; Catherine (Randy) Olson, Pine Island, Minn.; Monica (Jerome) Leichtnam, Faribault, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Catherine (Paul) Hass, Stewartville, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Robert and Earl; three sisters, Eleanor, Lorraine, and Lucille.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 4, 2010, at the Czaplewski Family Funeral Home at 501 2nd Street NW, Hayfield, Minn.

www.czaplewskifuneralhomes.com BYRON -- Hilda A. Tompkins, 100 of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, formerly of Byron, Minn., passed away on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at ManorCare Health Services in Cedar Rapids.

Services will be held on Saturday, April 3, at 11 a.m. at Dibble Funeral Home in Kasson, Minn.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

Hilda is survived by children, Russell (Deanna) Tompkins of Kasson, Minn., Evelyn (Iver) Beck of Minnetonka, Minn., Donald (Stephanie) Tompkins of Austin, Texas, Kay (Gary) Kalis of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Susan Fiyalko of Clearwater, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence, infant son, John and grandson, Dwayne Fiyalko.

Hilda was born Jan. 10, 1910, in Itasca County, Minnesota. She married Clarence Tompkins on Nov, 6, 1935. They farmed in rural Byron, Minn., where they were active in church and community.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Amenity Hospice Compassus of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to the Byron United Methodist Church or to the Alzheimers Association.

Dibble Funeral Home in Kasson is in charge of arrangements.

ROCHESTER -- Leona Mae (Starin) Brown of Golden Living Center East, died Wednesday March 31, 2001 at her residence.

She was born November 1, 1926 in Minot, North Dakota. On July 14, 1946 she married Richard "Dick" Brown at St. Francis Church in Rochester. Mr. Brown, a retired A.M.P.I. employee, died May 21, 1992. Leona had worked as a waitress, Greenway Coop employee, and for Olmsted Medical Group.

She is survived by one brother, Gerald Starin of California; two sons, David S. (Dorothy) Brown, and Terry Brown both of Rochester; three grandchildren Jody, Judd and Samantha; and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter Cathy, and a brother Berry.

There will be a private graveside service at Fort Snelling National Cemetery with no local services.

Macken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

ST. CHARLES -- Catherine M. Kramer, age 105, Centenarian of rural St. Charles passed away at her home March 30, 2010.

Catherine was born September 7, 1904 in Plainview Township to Michael & Anna (Molling) Pletsch. She graduated from Plainview High School. Catherine married Forrest Kramer June 28, 1933 at St. Joachims Catholic Church in Plainview. They farmed in Quincy Township in Olmsted County.

She was an active member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church of Elba.

She is survived by one son Donald Kramer of rural St. Charles; four daughters Rose (William) Palmby of Brownsburg, Ind., Rita (John) Dohlke of Apple Valley, Minn., Kathy (Michael) Steberg of Northfield, Minn., and Dorothy (Patrick) McConnell of Rochester, Minn.; seven grandchildren; 14 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest; four brothers, and three sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, April 5, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Elba, with Father Jim Callahan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Schad & Zabel Funeral Home. Friends may also call one hour before the service at the church.

Memorials are preferred to Heartland Hospice of Rochester, Minn.

AUSTIN -- Donna Mae (Krause) Williams, age 86, of Austin, Minn., died Monday, March 29, 2010 at her home.

Donna was born on the family farm in Deerfield Township, near Owatonna, Minn., on February 28, 1924 to Adolph and Marie (Manke) Krause. She graduated from Owatonna High School and attended the Minneapolis School of Business, and the McPhail School of Music. On November 11, 1946 she married Samuel A. Williams in Owatonna. Donna co-owned Williams Plumbing with her husband Samuel.

She was a member of our Savior's Lutheran Church, the Isaac Walton League and a former member of the Northwestern Singers. In her spare time she enjoyed singing, playing cards, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Donna was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Williams, son, Mark Williams, daughter, Sandra Stransky.

Donna is survived by her children: Suzanne (Dana) Miller, Austin, Minn.; Patricia (Michael) Lewis DeVinny, Owatonna, Minn.; John (Jan) Williams, Duluth, Minn.; Kenneth Stransky ( Sandra), Owatonna, Minn.; Jim and Marion Williams, Danville, Ill.; eight grandchildren, four great- grandchildren; and Chuck Reining.

Funeral Services will be Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 10 am at the Hormel Historic Home, with Reverend Glenn Monson officiating.

Visitation will be at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and at the Hormel Historic Home for one hour before the service on Saturday. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery. A reception will be held at the Hormel Historic Home following the interment.

ROCHESTER -- Bruce Allan Makinen, of San Jose, Calif., formerly of Rochester, died from the effects of his life-long struggle with alcoholism on March 26, 2010 in San Jose, Calif. He was 46.

Bruce was born April 29, 1963 in Rochester, Minn., to Ken and Dorothy Makinen. He graduated from John Marshall High School in 1981, from Bemidji State University with a degree in Computer Science and Math in 1985, with additional post graduate studies at the University of South Dakota and Arizona State University.

Bruce found his niche in Human Factors engineering and worked in his field for many years at Colorado Memory Systems, Hewlett-Packard, and Agilent Technologies, where he held several patents. Most recently, he was employed by McAfee Software in San Jose. A runner in high school, his love of the sport expanded to running marathons, including the Boston Marathon, and he went on to compete in numerous Ironman triathlons. He volunteered at many local road races where his enthusiasm helped others achieve their goals.

He loved all animals, but especially his beloved English Springer Spaniels, Abbie and Callie. He loved to cook and travel, was quick-witted and generous, and once you met him you were friends for life.

He married Wendy Chaney in November 1992. They divorced in July 2009.

He is survived by his parents, Ken and Dorothy Makinen of Fort Collins, Colo.; his brother Scott Makinen and his wife Jeni of Fort Collins; his niece Claire Makinen of Fort Collins; his former wife Wendy Makinen and their dog Lola of Los Gatos, Calif.; his former in-laws Walt and Penny Chaney of Loveland, Colo.; former relatives Walt and Jeanine Chaney of Pensacola, Fla., David and Sandy Chaney of Loveland, Colo., and Steve and Deb Eppel of Fort Collins, Colo.; and his nieces and nephews Michael, Tara, Shay, Blaine, Kelci and Derek. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Memorial contributions can be made in his memory to the Humane Society.
