Maxis to halt cloud storage service this July 31 [Mobile 88 Online (Malaysia)]

(Mobile 88 Online (Malaysia) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Back in 2012, Maxis Berhad debuted its own cloud storage service known as Loker, which looks like will be discontinued by the end of this month.

Maxis’ Loker cloud service will be ended this month Loker was introduced with some fanfare by Malaysia’s number one mobile service provider, and seemed to make sense at the time as cloud storage was taking off in a big way thanks to the release of widely-used and recognisable cloud-based services like Dropbox, Box, Microsoft’s OneDrive, and Google’s own Google Drive.

Maxis added some localised value to its cloud offering as Loker came with 5GB of free space, that not only could Maxis subscribers use to save their files and  audio/video media, but also store their list of contacts. Furthermore, signing up for smartphone bundles with Maxis used to come with free storage  space on Loker as well, such as the Samsung Galaxy SIII bundle and the iPhone 5 iValue package- but such promotions have been downplayed in more recent times.

At the time it must have seemed like a very attractive proposition to be able to have contacts saved across all one’s devices, as normally when one moved to a new device one could not port over the existing contacts unless manually backed up in one’s email or hard drive.

Maxis is halting the cloud storage service on July 31, and has not as of this writing given any reason for the discontinuation. Maxis and Hotlink users should take note and create backups for their documentation, media files, and contacts in one of the other cloud-based outlets- Mobile88 breaks down the best cloud storage solutions for you right here.
