White Space Radio System Supports WISPs

(Mobile Development and Design Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The result of a Carlson and Neul partnership, RuralConnect takes flight as the first commercially available white-space radio system for wireless Internet service providers (WISPs). The system delivers up to 16 Mbits/s of bandwidth for each available vacant TV channel and the ability to make long-range, non-line-of-sight links. RuralConnect technology employs unused portions, dubbed white spaces, of the UHF spectrum for digital communication. Since UHF signals can travel through walls and other obstacles, a line of sight to subscribers’ homes is not necessary. The technology also uses single-carrier frequency-domain equalization (SCFDE) technology to cancel the effect of multipath, allowing reliable long-range connections over any terrain. Depending on the area, up to 20 channels are available. Concurrently, Carlson is launching a line of omnidirectional and sectoral basestation antennas for TV white-space broadband.
