(Winnipeg Free Press (Canada) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Social media doughnuts I saw this picture recently that used a metaphor to explain social media with doughnuts. It's completely on point. There are so many social networks to be on these days and in the past I've written articles on how to choose the right one for you. In general, having a Facebook and/or a Twitter account will keep you in the loop. My personal new favourite social network is Instagram, a photo-sharing service. I've always had the Instagram app to edit cool photos, but recently I found out you can follow other users and gain followers as well. It's really cool, and you should follow me on Instagram: daveybell.

OS X Mountain Lion announced Apple is known for having its cat-named software lineup... Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, etc. But at this point, it is running out of mainstream cat names -- so it is delving into specific breeds like mountain lion, which I personally think is hilarious. This past week, Apple released information about its new software OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. This version is supposed to have more than 100 new features. One of the best new features is the iMessage for the Mac platform. This will allow for sending texts on your computer. Other things like iOS and Twitter migration are coming as well and include features such as Notes, Reminders, Notification Center, and Game Center. Have you ever noticed people say "Macs don't get viruses." Well, for the most part this is true. But in 10.8, Apple is releasing a feature called GateKeeper. This will aim to keep your Mac safer than ever from malicious software, which is interesting because is Apple worried about viruses now or is it adding an extra precaution? Overall, I'm very excited about the new operating system. I'm mostly excited about notifications and iMessage merging onto the desktop... I feel this will really keep me in sync with what I have to do. Are you excited for Lion? Tweet about it, using the hashtag #wpgmountainlion.

Western Digital My Book: Live Duo This past week, Western Digital sent me one of its brand-new hard drives. I've always been a fan of Western Digital and bought its hard drives before it contacted me; it makes a quality product. Anyway, it sent me this Live Duo product which not only has physical storage, but it also offers personal cloud storage -- which is an emerging and attractive technology. It has a double-safe backup with RAID mirroring, which basically means nothing is ever going to be lost. This hard drive is 4TB, which can hold 480 movies, or 1,000,000 songs, or 800,000 photos. The hard drive works with Mac, Windows, iPad, Smartphones and Streams Media. Now the product does have a $400.00 price tag, which can seem a bit high. But if you think about it, can you really put a price on safe data? I will be doing some tests and creating my final review by next week, so look for it. I'm excited to have this product, and I'd like to thank Western Digital for allowing me to review it.

iPad 3 screen resolution rumours The past few weeks, I've been writing about iPad 3 rumours. Mac Rumors has claimed it has scored an iPad 3 display and what it claims is that the display is two times the size of the current iPad screen! Let me answer your question right away: No, it's not going to be an 18-inch tablet, but the resolution will be absolutely dynamite. It's rumoured to be 2,048 x 1,536. The current iPad has 1,024 x 768 pixels; what a difference. The current iPad has a pixel density of 132 per inch, and the new iPad will have 264 pixels per inch. If this rumour is true, the iPad 3 will have a drop-dead gorgeous and razor-sharp display. So sharp, in fact, that you won't even be able to see the pixels from a reading distance away. I really hope this rumour proves true, because that would be awesome! (c) 2012 F.P. Canadian Newspapers Limited Partnership
