AppliedMicro Announces Full Solution Availability of Industry's First 100G OTN Transponder/Muxponder Solution

SUNNYVALE, Calif. --(Business Wire)--

Applied Micro Circuits (News - Alert) Corp., or AppliedMicro (Nasdaq: AMCC (News - Alert)), today announced general production availability of the industry's first standard 100 Gigabit per second transponder/muxponder solutions for Optical Transport Networks (OTN) and data centers. After making their debut one year ago, the company's designs have passed all interoperability tests and are reaching initial stages of deployment in 100G carrier and data center networks as equipment vendors seek time-to-market advantage for expanded bandwidth and capacity.

The 100G transponder/muxponder is capable of multiplexing any combination of 10G and 40G client signals into a 100G OTN signal (OTU4). As a member of AppliedMicro's (News - Alert) family of 100G OTN solutions, the Muxponder is designed to help operators expand network capacity of the Internet by a factor of ten to support increasing global demand for high definition video, mobile, social networking, business transactions, video conferencing and cloud computing services. Additionally, these 100G OTN pipes are being deployed between high capacity data centers where significant growth is driving demand for higher speed connections.

AppliedMicro's 100G Muxponder supports any combination of signals from 10G and 40G Ethernet to legacy OC192/OC768 SONET/SDH, as well as 8G and 10G Fibre Channel. As a result, the solution can carry both data and storage traffic efficiently and can be used for file and backup synchronization between large data centers. It also interoperates with all major forward error correction (FEC) schemes in long-haul optical network architectures. The solution unifies AppliedMicro's TPO/TPOT404 transponder/muxponder and PQ60T 10/40G mapper/framer PHY with a common Application Programming Interface (API) that enables efficient integration and maintenance efforts for equipment vendors.

"AppliedMicro's 100G trasponder/muxponder reference design provides a common software API for both its SoftSilicon and ASSP solutions, making it efficient to integrate with system software of the host platform or line card," said Lars Pedersen, Chief Technology Officer of AppliedMicro TPACK (News - Alert) A/S. "System design and maintenance efforts for 100G platforms are greatly simplified and streamlined with a common API, and it provides software investment protection for future upgrades as AppliedMicro's highly integrated silicon devices come to market offering even greater cost-reduction potential."

AppliedMicro's transponder/muxponder silicon and compatible software combine the fastest way for system vendors to deploy 100G links. Reference designs and API for the 100G transponder/muxponder are now available.

"Our recent survey of carriers shows that new deployments of 100G technology appear unstoppable. Operators will deploy higher speed wavelengths to achieve the lowest cost per bit for the transport of SONET/SDHOTN, and Ethernet network traffic," said Andrew Schmitt, Directing Analyst, Optical, for Infonetics Research. "Solutions like AppliedMicro's transponder/muxponder designs are well positioned for the rapid deployments of 100G OTN technology for long-haul applications."

"Solutions like AppliedMicro's 100G OTN Muxponder and Acacia's 100G MSA Modules allow telecom equipment manufacturers to bring systems to market quickly and confidently. By providing the flexibility to meet evolving industry standards and accommodate for customizations, they're enabling the rapid deployment of 100G in carrier networks," said John LoMedico, Vice President of Sales and Business Development for Acacia Communications, a leader in the MSA Module market at 100G speeds and beyond.
