Singapore PM orders update of voter rolls

SINGAPORE, Jan 03, 2011 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has ordered an update of the register of electors by Feb. 28, which some analysts said is sign that the general election is closer.

The revised register will have the names of all Singapore citizens qualified to vote as of Jan. 1, 2011, local media reported Tuesday.

It is the third update since the last general election in Singapore in May 2006.

An Elections Department spokesman said more details about the revision can be expected in two weeks.

While news of the revision invite speculation about the timing of the next polls, lawmakers and observers said the move is a way to ensure that there would be more eligible voters at the next polls.

The next general election is due by Feburary 2012, but some observers are expecting it to take place as early as end-March this year.
