Hickory home invasion death still being investigated

HICKORY, Feb 27, 2013 (The Charlotte Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Police are still investigating last Saturday's incident in which a man was shot and killed after he allegedly broke into another man's home.

Authorities said Wednesday they have not finished the investigation into the alleged home invasion, in which 32-year-old Jonathan Lamar Jordan of Hickory was killed.

Police say Jordan allegedly broke into the home of 68-year-old Paul Ohle about 9 a.m. Saturday. The two fought for several minutes before the shooting, according to Ohle.

He said he confronted Jordan shortly after his side door was kicked in. Ohle said that when he grabbed his cell phone, Jordan took it from him. Ohle told police he then went to get a shotgun he keeps behind his door, but Jordan began fighting with him.

Ohle eventually managed to get to his bedroom, where he keeps a handgun. He told police that Jordan grabbed the gun and hit him over the head.

According to police, Ohle said he managed to grab the gun from Jordan and shot him several times.

"I was fighting for my life," Ohle told WCNC-TV, the Observer's news partner.

Police say Ohle's side door appeared to have been damaged. Ohle needed hospital treatment for a gash on his head, which he said happened when Jordan struck him with the gun.

Police say the district attorney's office will decide if any charges will be filed in the case.
