BRIEF: Horry County police ask residents to report telephone scam

Feb 21, 2013 (The Sun News (Myrtle Beach - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Horry County police are reporting a scam, that first surfaced about two years ago, has occurred again in the area involving elderly people and their grandchildren being arrested, Sgt. Robert Kegler said.

In the scam, the victim will get a call in the middle of the night and the person will pretend to be their grandchild, who has been arrested out of the country and in need of money to "make the charges go away," Kegler said. A second person will get on the phone and pretend to be a lawyer and give the victim information about how to wire the money to help the grandchild.

Later, the person discovers their grandchild was not out of the country or arrested, Kegler said. Horry County police first received calls about this scam about two years ago.

Anyone who receives a telephone call similar to that should report it to police.
