El Paso Lower Valley GECU opens innovative branch in Lower Valley

The Lower Valley has a new GECU branch with innovative technology, not only for El Paso but for Texas, officials said.
The newest GECU branch, which features three Personal Teller Machines and a virtual office, will celebrate its opening at noon today at 429 N. Yarbrough. The first location with such teller machines opened in 2011 at the corner of Montwood and Desert Sun.
"The new technology is actually the first to be introduced in El Paso and in Texas in financial institutions. The Personal Teller Machines will allow members to use the machines for the same convenient services offered at GECU like deposits and withdrawals, loan payments, check cashing and cash transfers," said Ceci Davila, vice president of operations.
When people walk up to the Personal Teller Machines, they will be able to talk to a GECU teller via the machine screen, who will help them with their transactions. They can also use a handset to talk more privately.
The virtual office also will provide a variety of services through a live video chat with a teller at a centralized location.
"They will be able to open accounts or apply for loans, and it takes place pretty much through a two-way chat," Davila said.
Bank officials said the innovative branch provides a lot of benefits for both members and employees.
"For one, there's the security because our tellers are actually behind the scenes, and it also allows us to handle transactions more accurately since we're talking to members who are guiding us on what they need step by step," Davila said.
The branch will have extended hours, open until 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, which will be more convenient for Lower Valley residents. It also has two drive-thru ATM machines.
Via chat, Carmen Aguirre, a virtual member sales and service officer, demonstrated the virtual office experience.
"I love that we can still do member interaction," she said. "Even though it's behind camera, it still feels like I'm right here with the member and can communicate just like it was an office."
Thursday morning, several people walked into the branch and tried the Personal Teller Machines for the first time. GECU tellers made small talk with clients as they guided them through the process of withdrawing money.
Danny Esparza said he liked the convenience and quick response of the machines.
"I like that there are not too many people because they may be afraid of using the technology," he added.
Esparza said he plans to drop by the innovative branch regularly.
