Panthers quarterback Cam Newton returns to class at Auburn

Jan 15, 2013 (The Charlotte Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- An Auburn athletic department spokesman said Cam Newton is back at school this offseason trying to blend in and be a normal student.

Of course, not every Auburn student has a 10-foot, 1-ton bronze statue of him or herself on campus.

Tuesday was the Panthers' quarterback and former Heisman Trophy winner's first day back in school at Auburn as he works to complete his sociology degree.

Kirk Sampson, assistant athletic director for media relations, said he did not know how far along Newton is in completing his degree. A minimum of 120 credit hours is required to receive a sociology degree from Auburn, according to the school's official website.

Newton attended the University of Florida in 2007 and 2008 before transferring to Blinn College, a junior college in Texas, in January 2009. He enrolled at Auburn in 2010 and spent two semesters there before focusing on the 2011 NFL draft.

Sampson said Newton does not want to do interviews and would rather focus on his studies. Students posted photos on Facebook and Twitter of Newton walking to and sitting in class wearing sweats and headphones around his neck.

Newton isn't the only Panthers player back at school this offseason. Rookie linebacker Luke Kuechly is back at Boston College to finish his marketing degree at BC's Carroll School of Management. He told the Observer on Dec. 31 he needed two semesters to complete his degree.
