Broadcom Integrates STB Technology with Comcast

Jan 10, 2013 (Close-Up Media via COMTEX) -- 2013 CES International Broadcom Corp., a company focusing on semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, announced that Comcast has chosen its connected home set-top box (STB) technology for use in the RNG150N interactive STB now shipping to subscribers.

According to a release, based on the Broadcom BCM7125 system-on-a-chip (SoC) and running Comcast Reference Design Kit (RDK) version 1.1, the Comcast RNG150N STB powers the latest in interactive HDTV programming, connectivity, whole-home media distribution and 3D user interfaces.

"Broadcom's integration capability accelerates the design and deployment of powerful new connected home devices, maximizing the potential of our RDK," said Steve Reynolds, Senior Vice President of Premises Technology for Comcast. "We are committed to delivering rich, interactive and whole-home connected TV experiences and the RNG150N gives our subscribers a powerful new way to enjoy TV." Key features of Broadcom's BCM7125 STB SoC, as described by the Company, include: -Integrates five different STB functions into one device while achieving power savings and reduced footprint and including a full DOCSIS cable modem, MPEG 4 HD decoder, MoCA 1.1 modem, 1GHz tuners and 3D graphics.

-Supports video-on-demand (VoD), IP video streaming, and integration of the X1 user interface (UI) system with social networking, personalization and search.

-Features configuration option to run the X1 UI as a client device connected to an XG1DVR server. This provides greater deployment flexibility for Comcast to deliver the X1 AnyRoom DVR service to subscribers.
