AT&T to move 76 Greensboro jobs

GREENSBORO, Dec 18, 2012 (News & Record - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- AT&T is sending 76 jobs from Greensboro to Birmingham, Ala., officials said.

The company told workers at their Greensboro Credits and Collections call center last week that they will have to make a decision whether to move to Birmingham, said spokesman Marty Richter.

"Virtually all of them will have a job if they decide to move," Richter said. "It's no reflection on the employees. It's to become more efficient." Richter said the company's plan is to consolidate all the call centers into one building. The move from Greensboro will affect workers at the center at 2200 Pinecroft Road. The company's lease is running out at the building, Richter said.

The consolidation was expected to affect more than 300 people in the Southeast.

Chris Myrick, president of Communications Workers of America, the union representing the employees, said his main concern is keeping the jobs in the Triad. He argued that AT&T owns several area facilities where the work can be done.

But, Richter said the move is intended to be cost-saving.

"It's an extremely competitive business," he said.

AT&T is the only major U.S. wireless provider that uses a union workforce, Richter said. He said categorizing the move as layoffs is inaccurate. Most of the employees will retain jobs if they decide to move.

Most of the workers make around $900 each week, Myrick said. All have been in the communications industry at least 10 years, he said. Myrick on Friday sent a letter to the Greensboro City Council, asking it to encourage AT&T to keep the jobs here.

"Can you imagine this at Christmas " Myrick asked. "We believe they should have more time with their families to decide." ___ (c)2012 News & Record (Greensboro, N.C.) Visit the News & Record (Greensboro, N.C.) at www.news-record.com Distributed by MCT Information Services
