BRIEF: Arson suspected in supermarket fire

CORDELE, Dec 06, 2012 (Cordele Dispatch - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A late night fire causing damage to the outside of a local supermarket was believed to be the work of an arsonist.

Personnel with the Cordele Fire Department received a call about a structure fire at the Save A Lot supermarket, at 1101 East 16th Ave. just before 11 p.m. Monday night.

Upon their arrival they discovered that the shopping carts outside the store were on fire and that the blaze had traveled under the canopy and up the side of the building causing significant damage to the buildings south side which is the front of the store.

According to Chief Augusta Telfair of the CFD, the store had already closed for the evening, so no one was inside the building at the time.

"There is smoke and heat damage to the canopy and up the side of the building, but we were able to get it out before it spread to the interior of the supermarket," he said.

Telfair said the shopping carts were intentionally set on fire and that the matter has been turned over to the Cordele Police Department, who also responded to the scene, for further investigation.

"There is some surveillance video of the scene that may lead to the person or persons responsible for the fire," he added.
