Local Goodwill recycles millionth pound of computer parts

Nov 28, 2012 (The News-Sentinel (Fort Wayne - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Goodwill Industries of Northeast Indiana announced Wednesday they have sent their one millionth pound of computers and computer accessories to be recycled through a partnership with the Dell Reconnect program.

Since the partnership began in August 2009, Goodwill has diverted one million pounds of used computer equipment from local landfills. For free, individuals may drop off used computers and equipment at the agency's nine stores and 13 donation sites in Fort Wayne and the surrounding area. The computers and equipment do not need to work and all manufacturers are accepted. All proceeds recovered from the recycled computer equipment go to Goodwill to support job training and employment services programs President and CEO Bill Warriner stressed that computers are safe to use, but contain some environmentally sensitive materials. These materials can be safely removed or recycled, but only if the computers are kept out of landfills in the first place.

Dell has worked with Goodwill since 2004, growing Goodwill participation to 65 percent of the members (108 in the U.S. and Canada) over the last six years. Since its inception, Dell Reconnect has diverted more than 170 million pounds of e-waste from landfills and created about 250 green jobs.
