FOOTBALL: Odessa High tries to finish season with first victory

Nov 09, 2012 (Odessa American - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The season finale.

That's what tonight's game between Odessa High and Amarillo Tascosa is for both teams.

The 7:30 p.m. kickoff will be the final one of the season as the Bronchos and Rebels try to end on a high note.

For Odessa High (0-9 overall, 0-7 District 2-5A), it is the final chance to get in the win column. Odessa High never has gone 0-10 and last finished winless at 0-9-1 in 1970.

"This isn't what you expect when you start the season," OHS head coach Ron King said. "Our goals are always the same and we've fallen short.

"The kids have really worked hard all year and to go out on a positive note would be great for them. We have one more chance." In order to take advantage of that chance, the Bronchos are going to need to build on last week's offensive effort against Midland High.

Even though they fell 44-7 to the Bulldogs, it was the first time since the second game of the season the OHS offense cracked the 300-yard barrier in total offense. Sophomore quarterback Dayton Dennard threw for 120 yards last week, the first time he's passed for more than 100 yards in a game in his varsity career.

Odessa High, however, has had trouble finishing its drives, twice stalling in the first half against Midland High.

"We've given ourselves chances in several games," King said. "But we'll take a penalty or miss an assignment and that gets us off schedule and the drive stalls." Amarillo Tascosa (1-8, 1-6) ended a winless season with a 28-14 victory last week against Lubbock Coronado.

Rebels head coach Ken Plunk, a former Permian assistant, likes what he's seen the past several weeks as Tascosa has played several strong games leading up to the victory.

Peyton Brooks and Tucker Davidson split time at quarterback and give the Rebels different looks as Brooks is very adept at running the option-based offense Plunk installed this season, while Davidson throws the ball better.

When Davidson is at quarterback, Brooks is utilized as a wide receiver to make plays, which he did last week against Coronado.

"Tucker throws it well and is a good leader," Plunk said. "Peyton's still our starter, but when we want to do different things and move Peyton out to wide receiver, Tucker comes in and does a nice job.

"This is going to be a very tough game for us because Odessa High is in the same position we were in last week. They are hungry for a victory, they are at home and we are going to have to really work hard if we expect to win."
