SNC condemns detention of Lebanese reporter Itani

BEIRUT, Oct 29, 2012 (The Daily Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Head of the Syrian National Council Abdel-Basset Sida condemned in remarks publish Monday the detention of Lebanese journalist Fidaa Itani by a group of Syrian rebels.

"We denounce and reject the kidnapping of Fidaa Itani," Sida told Al-Joumhouria newspaper, vowing that the Lebanese journalist would be released soon.

Itani, who works for Lebanon's LBCI television, was detained Saturday by a group of Syrian rebels who call themselves the Azaz Northern Storm Brigade.

A statement on the group's Facebook page said that Itani was "under house arrest" in the Aleppo district of Azaz, north Syria, "because his work was not compatible with the course of the Syrian revolution and revolutionaries." It also said the journalist would be freed in a few days and gave reassurances that he was in good health.

The SNC chief also said that the "Syrian revolution" should respect and preserve the freedom of others.

"The revolution should abide by the [U.N.] charter on human rights and respect the freedom and dignity of journalists as they are supporting the revolution and helping it to echo throughout the world," he said.

"I am against all forms of abduction, especially those of journalists," Sida added.

Video footage of the Lebanese journalist was uploaded to YouTube by the Azaz Northern Storm Brigade Sunday.

"I am the journalist Fidaa Itani. I am under house arrest at the Azaz Northern Storm Brigade... And I am fine," Itani said in a 20-second clip.
