Verizon has all pathways covered

Oct 24, 2012 (Boston Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Global communications giant Verizon, which already has an innovation center in Waltham and dozens of local retail stores, is looking to broaden its presence in the Hub.

"This is a great place for Verizon. ... We like it here very much and we look to continue to grow here in the Boston area," John Stratton, president of Verizon Enterprise Solutions, told business leaders at a Boston College Chief Executives' Club of Boston luncheon yesterday. Stratton was a last-minute replacement speaker for Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam.

"Our business is in a constant state of evolution and so one part slows down and the next part really heats up and starts to grow and the key is to meet the demand," he said. "We like doing business here. We do all of our business here, meaning we cover all of the pathways." Noting that nearly 2.3 billion people around the world are connected to the Internet, Stratton said Verizon invested $150 billion from 2006 to 2011 to make its various wireless, fiber-optic and wireline networks "building blocks" for the Internet age -- $700 million of which was geared toward Massachusetts.

He said Verizon's network for expansion is built on four pillars: mobile; fiber to the home network; a global backbone network that can handle growth in Internet data and video traffic; and its cloud computing environment.

Verizon launched its wireless 3G network in 2004 and the next phase, the 4G LTE network, in 2010.

"What we see is a technology that's literally changing the way mobile works," he said. "The super fast speeds of LTE make it a game-changer in the mobile world." The average American home has seven connected devices, and Verizon is looking to create "a broadband network that will really reinvent the traditional telephone networks" with FiOS, which delivers high-definition video and broadband to more than 17.5 million customers, Stratton said.

Verizon's new company, Verizon Enterprises Solutions, currently has 500,000 miles of high-speed cables around the world, enough to circle the globe more than 20 times, while the company's "cloud" network of more than 200 data centers can store anything that can be digitized, meaning that any kind of content, from education to health care services, can be delivered anywhere, anytime over a mobile connection.

Projects in development include a secure ID system that will help health care providers meet HIPAA, or Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, requirements for securing patient data. Verizon also has a mobile wallet pilot program -- now available in Salt Lake City and Austin, Texas -- that allows users to pay for purchases using just their smartphones.
