Orwigsburg approves a dozen cell antennas

ORWIGSBURG, Aug 09, 2012 (Republican & Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Orwigsburg Borough Council approved a lease for a dozen cellular communication antennas by Verizon Wireless on a water tower in the borough Wednesday.

Without discussion, the council approved the lease during their regular council meeting.

The lease is for five years and is renewable after five years, borough Manager Mike Lonergan said. No representatives from Verizon attended the meeting. The one member from the public in attendance made no comments. Verizon can terminate the lease given sufficient notice after the five-year term. Renewals are possible.

The sketch plan calls for 12 antennas on top of a 70-foot borough water tower at Ridgeview Drive.

"Sometime in the spring might be realistic," Lonergan said about when the antennas could be up.

Orwigsburg will see revenue of $1,500 a year with an increase of 3 percent per year after the first year.

Now that the lease is acted on, a special exception is needed for the use. An application must be made to the borough zoning hearing board and must take place within 60 days. The board then has 45 days to reach a decision, Lonergan said.

No application has been received yet, he said.

Lonergan said he thought placing the antennas on the water tower might take until spring. The proposal for the use has the antennas not exceeding 10 feet. A small shed is also planned for equipment.

Scott Devlin, with GTL USA Inc., Camp Hill, contracted by Verizon Wireless, spoke at the July work session and said the use is being proposed to increase capacity and coverage in the area.
