ActiveVideo Networks To Show Benefits of CloudTV For Independent Operators at Upcoming Show

SAN JOSE, Calif., July 20, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- ActiveVideo Networks(TM) will demonstrate next week how small and mid-size television service providers can harness the power of the cloud to cost-effectively deliver a state-of-the-art television user experience including on-demand search, navigation, personalization and HTML5-based web applications to all set top boxes. ActiveVideo's CloudTV(TM) platform employs an advanced HTML5 application engine running entirely in remote servers to execute and render the most advanced applications and user experiences.

At the Independent Show July 22-25 in Orlando, ActiveVideo will show how operators serving local and regional markets can exponentially extend the capabilities of existing STBs and seamlessly support next-generation devices at a fraction of the cost of other solutions. Using CloudTV, operators of any size can deliver compelling Web-based services and applications from the network cloud -- including advanced search and discovery, games, advanced advertising and Web-to-TV content -- that differentiate their offerings from satellite and other competing services, even on the oldest STBs in the operator's footprint.

"It's extremely difficult for operators serving smaller markets to amortize the capital and operational costs of replacing existing set-tops and infrastructure, as well as the cost of authoring new applications," said Jeff Miller, president and CEO of ActiveVideo Networks. "CloudTV transforms the equation: it enables content creation by typical web developers using standard web tools, streams the entire content experience from the cloud and allows operators to quickly deliver the most diverse, competitive mix of programming and applications, without the expense of new STBs or truck rolls." The scalable, enterprise-class CloudTV H5(TM) platform utilizes highly-optimized HTML5 browser technology running in remote servers to execute and render complete user experiences in the cloud. The fully-formed experiences are streamed to consumers' devices via MPEG-2 or H.264. Key presses on consumers' existing remote controls are sent to the remote server, controlling the application and the user experience. The latency between a consumer key press and the application response is so minimal that users do not perceive that the application is coming from miles away.

This innovative, patented technology makes it possible to create and deliver pixel-accurate applications and navigation user experiences across any digital set-top box or connected device. Because the application is fully executed and rendered on the cloud-based server, application designers can create complex animations and functionality without worrying about device capability.

Designed to interface seamlessly with existing cable operator network infrastructure and with no addition to or replacement of consumer premises devices, the "total cloud" approach can be completely deployed at low cost and with unparalleled service velocity. As television operators move more and more to a unicast distribution network, they can take advantage of the CloudTV platform to drive personalized, on-demand video to every customer.

CloudTV is available on approximately 10 million screens in the United States and abroad with Cablevision Systems, Oceanic Time Warner Cable and other operators, as well as on Philips-brand NetTVs. Earlier this year, ActiveVideo also announced that Comcast is using CloudTV in an enhanced video-on-demand (VOD) user experience trial.
