Hartselle man's car flips in US 31 accident

HARTSELLE, Jul 13, 2012 (The Decatur Daily - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Kathy Gillen's planned trip to the bank Thursday morning made her a witness and victim of a two-vehicle wreck.

She was preparing to turn left onto U.S. 31 South when Charles Wayne Roden, 62, of Hartselle lost control of his vehicle.

"All I could think was, 'I'm getting ready to be in a bad accident,' " Gillen said. "I turned my head and closed my eyes, but it wasn't as bad as I expected." When she opened her eyes, Gillen said, the trunk of Roden's vehicle was lying on the hood of her sports utility vehicle on Hidden Acres Road.

Roden, already on his way to Decatur General Hospital for a procedure, crawled out of his vehicle and was transported by ambulance to the hospital.

"He had a few scratches on him and a little blood, but I was glad he was OK," Gillen said.

A hospital spokeswoman said Roden was treated and released for non-life-threatening injuries.

The accident happened about 9:15 a.m. as a steady rain pounded the Tennessee Valley.

Hartselle Police Chief Ron Puckett said investigators were working on the report and that a cause of the accident was not immediately available.

Family members were behind Roden when he lost control of the vehicle, an officer at the scene said.

Gillen said Roden was traveling in the right lane on U.S. 31 North when his vehicle hydroplaned and turned sideways.

His vehicle tossed mud and grass onto Gillen's SUV, before flipping and landing upside down on her hood.
