Bingaman: Transportation Grants to Benefit New Mexico Veterans

Jul 03, 2012 (Congressional Documents and Publications/ContentWorks via COMTEX) -- WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman today announced that two New Mexico projects have been selected to receive a total of $746,500 to improve transportation services for veterans.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation will receive $414,000 to upgrade a regional call center to include scheduling software, in-vehicle technology and routing to improve access to transit services for more than 75,000 veterans who live in the northern counties of Santa Fe, Bernalillo, Los Alamos, Rio Arriba and Taos.

The Mid-Region Council of Governments will use its $332,500 grant to implement the first phase of a comprehensive one-call/one-click center, including the development and implementation of a one click web site, to provide the more than 78,000 veterans who live in the greater Albuquerque region with improved access and integrated referrals to participating transportation providers.

"Whether it's getting to and from work or to the VA clinic, transportation can be a barrier for some of our states' veterans. This funding will make it easier for veterans to access transportation services," Bingaman said.

Funding was awarded through the U.S. Department of Transportation's Veterans Transportation and Community Living Initiative, which helps local governments and transit agencies use upgraded technology to make it easier for veterans to access transit services such as buses, vans, taxis and other transportation systems.
