Rock band Breathe Carolina ventures into dance territory

Jun 28, 2012 (St. Louis Post-Dispatch - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Rock band Breathe Carolina hasn't been booked for any electronic dance music (EDM) lineups yet, but it's surely coming.

The Denver duo featuring David Schmitt and Kyle Even is inching closer and closer, with groovin' music including its latest song "Hit and Run," its first on a new label.

"We're willing to try everything. We're more than happy to play any show. We're just happy to play. People in the dance world are having fun," says Even. "Hell yeah to dance, hell yeah to rock, hell yeah to hip-hop. We want to get people moving, write something for everyone." Breathe Carolina is set to get folks moving in all kinds of ways during its slot at the long-running Vans Warped Tour at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater next week.

It's Breathe Carolina's third time at the all-day music festival.

"It's a big reunion really. Our favorite part is hanging with friends. There's a real camaraderie that comes with Warped, and it's fun to watch the process," he says. "You just gotta come and have a good time." That's easy enough with Breathe Carolina, whose latest album is "Hell is What You Make It" featuring the hit single "Blackout." "I just wanted the album to be us, everything in our past and our progression to our future as well. It has a 'I don't give a (expletive) attitude,' which was the name of a song from our previous record," he says, referring to "I.D.G.A.F." from 2009's "Hello Fascination." "We just wanted to write songs we could listen to and enjoy, and thought if we enjoyed them then somebody else would as well." In writing "Hell is What You Make It," one of Breathe Carolina's first considerations was how would the music translate live. They wanted to ensure when the music was played live, it would inspire listeners to want to move.

"That's where the dance part comes in, to get them moving in a different way. That was a thought in our minds. What kind of life would the song have live," he says.

The band is also flaunts its electro influences on the album, which comes from pop, techno, trance and other genres that have influenced the band, and acts as diverse as White Zombie and Ace of Base.

"I remember listening to Ace of Base when I was with mom in the car. I was getting a lot of genres at the same time, and that helped us define what we are doing now. It's having that never-ending database of doing anything you want," says Even.

The band, whose "Hell is What You Make It" was released on Fearless Records, is now a new part of the Columbia Records family. The song "Hit and Run" was released on Fearless/Columbia.

The collaboration came about at Fearless' pushing so the band could have every opportunity it could.

"We couldn't be happier," he says, while acknowledging such moves aren't always great in the end for bands. "Everything feels the same. The label is supporting what we're doing, we're writing the songs we want to write and we don't have people telling us we have to write certain songs. I've heard my fair share of horror stories but we're trying our best to not be one of those horror stories." "We want to show people that this works." ------ Vans Warped Tour Who Taking Back Sunday, All Time Low, the Used, New Found Glory, Streetlight Manifesto, Yellowcard, Pierce the Veil, Four Year Strong, Of Mice and Men, We the Kings, Breathe Carolina, Miss May I, Falling in Reverse, Rise Against, Anti-Flag, Every Time I Die, Mayday Parade, Blessthefall and many more When 11 a.m. July 5 Where Verizon Wireless Amphitheater How much $33.50 More info LiveNation.com Kevin C.
