SVCC to offer camps for kids

DIXON, Jun 16, 2012 (Daily Gazette - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Sauk Valley Community College will offer two College for Kids Camps this summer at the school, 173 state Route 2.

Sauk and the Burpee Museum of Rockford will have an Ice Age Camp for students in first through third grades.

The activities will be: -- Ice on the Move, July 9: Participants will find out what makes a glacier and will explore the features of glacial ice.

-- Mammoths and Mastodons: Busting Myths, July 10: Students will discover the difference between these two giants and how they lived in the Ice Age.

-- Predators of Illinois' Ice Age, July 11: Campers will learn about the real predators of the Ice Age.

-- The People of the Ice Age, July 12: Participants will find out about the first people of Illinois and will go on an archeological dig .

SVCC and the Discovery Center in Rockford will offer a Science Camp for students in fourth through sixth grade.

The camp will feature: -- LEGO Machine, July 30: Learn about levers, pulleys and spend the day designing and constructing LEGO contraptions.

-- Backyard Science, July 31: Campers will hunt for bugs and practice cartography and orienteering.

-- Video Games in Real Life, Aug. 1: Campers will engineer their own real life video games from Angry Bird catapults to Super Mario obstacle courses.

-- Buzzbots, Aug. 2: Participants will be able to create a "buzzbot" with electricity and a motor.

A Health Camp will be available through SVCC and the Area Health Education Center for students in sixth through eighth grade. The youth will work with medical professionals to explore the world of health and medicine from July 9 to 11. The camp will offer hands-on activities, such as extracting DNA, creating first aid kits and learning about organisms.

Both camps will be from 9 a.m. to noon each day. The cost is $89.

To register, call SVCC's Office of Admissions and Records at 815-835-6275 or stop by the admissions office in Room 1J1. Admissions office hours are from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays during the summer.
