Man who robbed St. Paul couple, raped wife gets 20 years

Jun 02, 2012 (Pioneer Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A Minneapolis man, charged with helping to rob a married couple in St. Paul, invading their home and raping the wife while his accomplices forced the husband to withdraw money from an ATM, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Kimanie Markeys Carter, 25, was one of three men accused of confronting the couple in their early 50s as they returned to their apartment in the 1700 block of Norfolk Avenue about 1 a.m., Aug. 26, according to a criminal complaint.

One man had a gun; the trio forced the couple into their apartment and searched for valuables, the complaint said. Two of the men took the husband to a bank and made him withdraw $500, the complaint said.

While that was happening, Carter stayed in the apartment and raped the wife, according to the complaint.

"This is a really disturbing case," prosecutor Susan Hudson said Friday, June 1, in Ramsey County District Court. Hudson said the crime left a "horrible impact" on the two victims, while Carter "displays no remorse for the crimes he committed and apparently lacks any empathy for the victims of his crimes." She called Carter "an extremely dangerous young man." Carter pleaded guilty to two counts of kidnapping and one count of first-degree burglary involving an assault, in which he admitted raping the woman, Hudson said.

A rape charge and two first-degree aggravated robbery charges against him were dismissed.

But the 20-year sentence handed down by Judge Lezlie Ott Marek for the burglary charge was the statutory maximum representing a "huge upward departure" from the sentencing guideline of eight years and two months, Hudson said.

Ott said the harsher sentence was justified by the "particular cruelty" and the "more onerous than usual" nature of the crime.

Carter will have to spend at least 13 years and four months in prison for the crime. He also received two five-year prison terms for the kidnapping charges, which will be served concurrently.

Carter declined to say anything before his sentencing.

But his lawyer, Connie Sue Iversen, said Carter had a dysfunctional, chaotic upbringing and has been involved in the criminal justice system since he was 9 years old.

In a 2007 incident, Carter pleaded guilty in Ramsey County District Court to breaking the necks of 10 puppies and throwing their bodies into a garbage bin.

Iversen said Carter doesn't think he needs counseling, but she said he is intelligent and articulate and still has a chance to make something of his life.
