Proposal may raise fees for emissions inspections

OGDEN, Jun 01, 2012 (Standard-Examiner - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Car owners may see their emissions inspection fees go up $5.

To examine the issue, the Weber-Morgan Board of Health will have a public hearing at 4 p.m. June 25 at the Weber-Morgan Health Department B Auditorium, second floor, 477 23 St., Ogden.

Assistant Administrator for Environmental Health Brian Cowan said inspection stations have requested to remove the Motor Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program's maximum emissions inspection fee cap.

This would give the inspection stations more say in how much they charge car owners in Weber County.

Currently, inspection stations cannot charge more than $25 for emissions inspections; however, the health department conceded to a proposal to raise the cap to $30.

"Since it's a governmentrequired test, the public shouldn't be subject to any random amount for that fee," Cowan said. "Twenty-five dollars is a perfectly reasonable fee for a test that takes less than 10 minutes." In the meantime, the public will be allowed to share oral or written comments prior to the meeting.

Written comments may also be submitted to the Environmental Health Section of the Health Department, or by email to bcowan@co.weber. ut.us, until 3:30 p.m. June 25.

Copies of the current fee schedule may be obtained online at www.webermorganhealth.org or at the Environmental Health office on the seconnd floor of the Weber-Morgan Health Department, 477 23rd St., in Ogden.
