BRIEF: Most inland areas have been doing well

May 17, 2012 (The Press-Enterprise - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The April report on unemployment and job growth for Inland Southern California will be released Friday, and the hope is that the modest increases reported since last summer can be at least be matched.

Riverside and San Bernardino counties have enjoyed job growth of 1.7 percent between last July and this February. This is what was reported at an economic forecast event held earlier this week for the Coachella Valley, with economists from UCLA's Anderson Center and Claremont McKenna College delivering the news.

Their presentation had even better news for people in parts of the hard-hit Central Valley, especially Stockton. The job growth there was an enviable 7.9 percent, a great number under any economic conditions. Bakersfield, at 3 percent job growth over the eight-month period, came in second.

In fact, those two cities, along with Fresno and the Inland Empire, were all ahead of Los Angeles and San Diego.

The fly in the ointment was Sacramento, which saw growth of only one percent. It's one of the things that happen when your major industry is government and governments get into fiscal trouble.
