U.S. Navy extends ITT Exelis technology maturation contract for Next Generation Jammer program

CLIFTON, N.J. --(Business Wire)--

ITT (News - Alert) Exelis (NYSE: XLS) has been awarded a $20 million contract with the U.S. Navy to extend the technology maturation phase of the Next Generation Jammer (NGJ) program.

The NGJ, the U.S. Navy's standoff jamming initiative, is the electronic warfare (EW) flagship program that will provide U.S. forces the ability to disrupt and disable an enemy's ground-based communications and electronic warfare capabilities. The technology will be a dramatic improvement compared with current jammer pods - ensuring that U.S. and allied forces dominate the electromagnetic spectrum and maintain that edge in the face of evolving threats.

The extension will enable Exelis to continue development of next-generation technology for the program. Exelis will concentrate on reducing size and weight of the hardware while increasing effective radiated power from the arrays. In addition, Exelis will improve the technology onthe exciter - the component that generates jamming signals. All of these improvements are critical to developing the most effective and efficient new system.

"The contract will bring the Next Generation Jammer one step closer to the battlefield and our warfighters," said Chris Bernhardt, Exelis executive vice president and president of the Electronic Systems division. "This funding allows us to continue our innovative maturation work on digital beam-forming, electronically steerable arrays and other critical technologies that are vital to protecting our forces."

Exelis has more than 40 years of experience in airborne electronic attack. As the first company to develop advanced digital technologies for precision jamming, Exelis most recently fielded the successful Universal Exciter Upgrade for the existing AN/ALQ-99 Tactical Jamming System, expanding its capabilities.

Exelis was awarded a technology maturation contract in 2010 by the Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, Md. The next stage of the NGJ program is the technology development phase, scheduled to begin in 2013, following a request for proposal expected within the next six months.

The Exelis work is being led by the Electronic Systems division's Clifton, N.J., and North Amityville, N.Y., facilities.
