BANGLADESH - Rising Up

(Monthly Southasia Magazine Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Staying true to its vision of a Digital Bangladesh, the state-run Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) recently signed a $10 million consultancy deal with the American firm, Space Partnership International (SPI). According to the deal, Bangladesh will build and launch its first ever satellite into space by 2015 in a landmark move towards opening a new era in communication and broadcasting and creating new businesses. The satellite, named “Bangabandhu,” after a Bangladesh independence hero, is expected to exponentially improve the country’s economy.

Bangladesh currently pays $11 million to foreign firms to provide private channels, telephone and radio services in the country. As a result of the contract, Bangladesh may earn close to $50 million every year after the satellite is launched and $3 billion in the next 15 years.

Apart from fostering media communication channels and improving telecom services in remote areas, the satellite will also facilitate telemedicine, emergency services and border security throughout the country. Meteorological data, including disaster warnings, will also be available via satellite. Such a state-of-the-art communication technology will reinforce the vision of Digital Bangladesh and boost the country’s economic development.

On the political front, Telecommunications Minister, Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju, is in talks with concerned parties to try to launch the satellite in two years so that the current government can see it happen during its tenure, which ends in 2014.
