Fencing firm weathers move to grow stronger ; Switch to business park premises helps company continue to flourish [Hull Daily Mail (England)]

(Hull Daily Mail (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) EACH year it manufactures millions of fencing products, which, if put end to end, would cover a distance of 3,000 miles.

Now, Grange Fencing is looking to strengthen its position as the UK's largest manufacturer of fencing panels after expanding to new premises in Paull.

The company relocated from Alexandra Dock to make way for the Green Port Hull development.

Managing director Duncan Hill said the new premises present the company with good foundations for further growth.

He said: "I joined Grange Fencing in 1985 and the business has been growing more or less year on year.

"We are seasonal, so even when we are growing, we grow in waves.

"The weather plays a big part on our business; when the wind blew in January, our sales went up as people replaced their fencing that had blown away.

"A few weeks ago, when it was unseasonably warm and everyone was in their gardens, that also caused an uplift in trade." Grange Fencing's new facility is based at the Humber Business Park, on a 6.2-acre site previously occupied by Yorkshire Portable Buildings (YPB). The site, which includes a large factory, storage warehouse and large, external storage yard, became available when YPB went into administration.

Mr Hill said: "Because our business is seasonal, we need to be able to respond quickly to customer requirements so we manufacture and store our products in the UK - we couldn't do that if we sourced goods from China or India, for example, where the lead time is about 14 weeks. "The move has given us a fantastic new factory, with money leftover to resurface the entire storage yard.

"Previously, we were leasing our building but now we own our premises, any investment we make is investing in our buildings, rather than someone else's.

"It has also provided us with what is essentially a 'free' building as the storage warehouse is largely unused at the moment, but will give us room to grow when we need to." This week, Lord Prescott visited Paull to officially open Grange's new factory.

He met with some of the company's 40-strong workforce before touring the site.

He said: "I have been very impressed with the way Grange has transformed this site. The business is growing and employing locally, which should be celebrated.

"I have also met some former unemployed men who have been taken on here, which is great." Tom Evans, of Scotts Property LLP, sold the site to Grange after being instructed by administrators for YPB.

InShort A move from Alexandra Dock, prompted by the Green Port Hull development, has brought big benefits for a thriving fencing company.
