More than $130,000 in stolen equipment recovered from Marlow residence

MARLOW, Apr 15, 2012 (The Duncan Banner - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- In January, the Stephens County Sheriff's Office responded to a death at 3104 Nichols Road in Marlow. While at the scene, deputies and Sheriff Wayne McKinney noticed some items around the property that didn't look like they really belonged there.

After months of investigating, McKinney's hunch proved correct -- correct in the amount of $130,000 to $150,000 worth of stolen equipment being at the Nichols Road property.

The Sheriff's Department had been originally been drawn to the property because the resident, Shawn Donald Phillips, 33, had been killed while cutting up a trailer. During the accident, a chain holding the trailer aloft had broke, causing the trailer to fall on Phillips.

Items at the scene included trailers, an extremely large industrial generator, a Kubota track hoe and other pieces of equipment and tools. Deputies investigating gathered serial numbers off the items and began searching a law enforcement database to see if any of the items were reported as stolen.

As of last week, most of the items had been traced and returned to the rightful owners. Among those were a generator that belonged to Verizon Cellular out of Jackson County, which had been stolen. The Kubota track hoe turned out to have been taken from Tillman County.

In addition, a 26-foot and a 24-foot gooseneck trailer came from Comanche County, and a tractor was traced back to the Tulsa area. In all, McKinney estimated the stolen equipment to be valued from $130,00 to $150,000.

"We may never know if (Phillips) worked alone or had help," McKinney said. "My investigators were very good at their job and this now brings our department to about $1.2 million in equipment recovered." ___ (c)2012 The Duncan Banner (Duncan, Okla.)
