Monarchs fall on big 2nd inning: Christopher Newport 7, Methodist 4

BURLINGTON, Apr 14, 2012 (The Fayetteville Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Top-seeded Christopher Newport used a five-run second inning to beat No. 5 seed Methodist 7-4 on Friday in the second round of the USA South Athletic Conference tournament.

The Monarchs (20-17) will play seventh-ranked N.C. Wesleyan -- which stayed alive with a 10-inning, 8-4 win over Averett on Friday -- today at 3:30 p.m. in the double-elimination tournament.

Methodist swept a two-game series with N.C. Wesleyan earlier this month, winning 3-2 and 6-5.

The Captains (27-6), ranked No. 3 in the nation, move on to face 12th-seeded Shenandoah today at noon.

After a scoreless first, Christopher Newport chased Methodist starter Andrew Womble with five runs on four hits in the second.

Reliever Josh Ayers walked in the fifth run of the frame, and then settled in to scatter six hits and two runs over five innings.

Trailing by three runs, the Monarchs threatened in the ninth inning. Tyler Younger led off with a single up the middle against the Captains' all-time saves leader Ryan Fleischmann, ranked No. 3 nationally.

After a strikeout, Dustin Brown walked and Steven Kirby reached on an error to load the bases for the Mon-archs. Fleischmann recovered, striking out Cody Molosky and getting David Lutz to end the inning with a groundout.

Trey Such went 3-for-4 to lead Methodist's offense. Younger went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
