Former Sunland Park employees, officials indicted on extortion, voter fraud charges

LAS CRUCES, Apr 13, 2012 (Las Cruces Sun-News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A Dona Ana County grand jury has indicted five former Sunland Park officials and employees on a host of extortion, conspiracy and voter fraud charges.

The grand jury returned its indictments Thursday.

Former City Councilor Angelica Marquez, 40, is charged with false voting, conspiracy, extortion, tampering with evidence and conspiracy.

Marquez is accused of participating in an alleged extortion plot against former mayoral candidate Gerardo Hernandez to blackmail him with a video showing him with a topless dancer.

Marquez is also alleged to have allowed city employee Priscilla Morales, 26, of El Paso, to use her home address in Sunland Park to register for the city's election on Feb. 7. Morales was indicted Thursday on false voting and conspiracy.

Silvia Gomez, 52, the former director of Sunland Park's senior center and a former city councilor, was also indicted on two counts each of false voting and conspiracy. Gomez allegedly offered to let an El Paso couple use her home address to register to vote in the city election.

Martah Alondra Lozano, 26, a former temporary human resources employee for the city, was indicted on extortion, tampering with evidence and conspiracy for allegedly trying to hide a laptop computer believed to have been used in the Hernandez blackmail plot.

Jesus Dario Hernandez, 55, the former public works director for Sunland Park, was also indicted Thursday on extortion, tampering with evidence and conspiracy charges. He was charged last week with five felonies, including fraud, for an alleged kickback scheme.

Each of the indicted individuals are free on $50,000 bonds except for Hernandez, who remains at-large and is believed to be in Mexico.
