Car thief nabbed after he pocket-dialed 911 from stolen vehicle

RENTON, Apr 12, 2012 (KCPQ/KMYQ-TV - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A Seattle man was arrested recently for car theft after police said he mistakenly pocket-dialed 911 multiple times from inside stolen vehicles.

The 911 dispatcher who took the first call heard the man, Wesley Strom, 40, discussing his plans to steal more cars with another person in the car. The initial 911 call took place on March 14, police said.

The 911 system showed that the call came from downtown Renton. However, police were not able to locate the vehicle from which the call came. Hours later, when a gray Toyota 4-Runner was reported stolen from downtown Renton, police were able to connect the theft to the 911 call.

On March 18, the Valley Communications dispatch center received two more 911 calls from the same number. In the second call that night, the same male voice from the initial call, Strom's, could be heard arguing with another voice about a possible plan. He could be heard suggesting that they park in the apartments behind Fred Meyer next to the 4-Runner. There, they could pull the rims off the car they were in, put them in the 4-Runner, and drive off in the 4-Runner, which the dispatcher noticed matched the description of the vehicle stolen a few days prior.

Officers were dispatched once again to seek out the men as the 911 system tracked their movements in a residential area north of Renton. One officer encountered a recently abandoned Honda with custom rims -- the Honda had been reported stolen earlier that day in Burien. They were not able to find the men.

On April 1, that same officer was dispatched to an apartment complex after a fourth 911 call in which a male voice could be heard discussing what kinds of cars to steal. He came across an occupied vehicle in the parking lot. One of the passengers in the vehicle said his cell phone was prone to mistakenly dialing 911. That passenger was Strom.

The officer confirmed that Strom's number matched up with the one that had mistakenly dialed 911 in the past, then he arrested Strom. During interrogation, Strom admitted to having stolen the 4-Runner, the Honda and numerous other vehicles. He remains in custody on $70,000 bail.
