Goodwin trial: Auburn police describe traffic stop

OPELIKA Ala, Apr 12, 2012 (Opelika-Auburn News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Auburn police officers responding to a robbery call in March 2011 say they stopped a car carrying four Auburn University players because the vehicle abruptly pulled onto a dirt road as the patrol cars approached.

The officer's testified Thursday morning during the ongoing trial of Antonio Goodwin, the first of the former players to be tried for the 2011 robbery.

Goodwin, Shaun Kitchens, Michael McNeil and Dakota Mosley face robbery, burglary and theft of property charges for an alleged home invasion near midnight on March 11, 2011. The other former Tigers are scheduled for trial in June.

The officers who pulled over the Chrysler carrying Goodwin and his co-defendants minutes after the robbery was reported say they found a .45-caliber Hi-Point handgun under the front passenger seat, where McNeil sat, and a pellet pistol on the back seat where Kitchens and Goodwin were sitting. The officers say Goodwin sat behind McNeil in the car driven by Mosley, and a safe taken from a residence in Conway Acres Mobile Home Park was recovered from the floorboard in front of Goodwin's seat.

The officers also testified they found one of the victims' cellphones in Goodwin's pants pocket.

The officers say Goodwin was wearing a black shirt, wooden rosary and a cast on one arm, which matched the description of one of the armed men who victims say robbed them on March 11, 2011.

Under cross examination by Goodwin's attorney, the officers said the defendant appeared nervous, but not intoxicated. The defense has argued Goodwin was impaired after smoking spice before the alleged robbery.
