Congressman Roscoe Bartlett Encourages Attendance at a FREE Cyber Security Regional Conference and EXPO for Businesses and Individuals to Learn Steps to Keep Your Data Secure

Apr 12, 2012 (Congressional Documents and Publications/ContentWorks via COMTEX) -- Washington, Apr 11 - Congressman Roscoe Bartlett encourages attendance at a FREE public Cyber Security Regional Conference and EXPO on Thursday, April 12 from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm at Hagerstown Community College (HCC) in Hagerstown, Maryland. The conference will take place in the Kepler Theater between 9:00 am and 12:00 noon. The EXPO featuring more than a dozen cyber companies will take place in an adjacent room that will be open between 8:30 am and 1:00 pm. SPACE IS LIMITED - More than 250 people are already signed up to attend. Reserve your space at this event online at https://bartlettforms.house.gov/Forms/Form/Default.aspx?ID=1746 or by calling (301) 694-3030.

Congressman Bartlett said, "I invite you to reserve your space and attend this free conference to learn from experts at federal government agencies and companies how you can identify cyber vulnerabilities and threats and learn techniques to secure your data and electronic infrastructure. Cyber terrorism and cyber crime is a grave risk that threatens the United States as a country, our businesses and individual Americans because it is an attractive, asymmetric mode of attack. The weakest link in our equipment or operations is our greatest vulnerability as an individual, business, and government agency." Among highlights at this FREE Cyber Security Regional Conference at HCC are: * KEYNOTE address from Brigadier General Linda Medler, Director, Capability and Resource Integration (J8), US Cyber Command * Presentation about "Cyber Security and our Nation's Space Weather and Energy Supply," by Mr. Gil Vega, Associate Chief Information Officer, and Chief Information Security Officer at the Department of Energy * Mr. Joe Albaugh, Chief Information Security Officer at the Federal Aviation Administration * Ms. Ursula Powidzki, Director, Office of Business Development, Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development * Live demonstration by Chickasaw Nation Industries * Question and Answer session with a panel of prime contractors.

Congressman Bartlett added, "I didn't know what to expect, but my first free cyber security conference that was hosted at Fort Detrick in Frederick last January attracted 350 people. Based upon popular demand, I've organized this regional conference at Hagerstown Community College to provide an opportunity for more individuals, and especially small business owners and representatives, to learn steps that you can take to deter hackers and keep your data secure. These experts are successfully overcoming the complex challenges of protecting the security of their data and infrastructure from cyber attacks that can originate from anywhere in the world with access to the Internet. The federal government is as vulnerable as the weakest link at a contractor or subcontractor and is steadily increasing requirements to validate the security of data as a condition of awarding contracts. All of these reasons and more are why it is so important for American companies and entrepreneurs to learn and do everything you can do to protect your data and infrastructure."
