IBM Corp. announces new product family

DURHAM, Apr 11, 2012 (The Herald-Sun - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- International Business Machines Corp. announced Wednesday the launch of a new product family that's slated to give clients access to a "ready-to-go, cloud system in a box." The company said the new systems incorporate different technology components needed to put together a private cloud system.

The new "PureSystems" products integrate server, storage and networking capabilities into one machine, according to a news release, and IBM's software allows for the systems to handle basic tasks automatically such as configuration, upgrades and application requirements. Companies can create private, self-service clouds using the systems, the release states.

Patty Dudek, vice president of cross platform software for the IBM Systems and Technology Group, said the offering is meant to simplify the system set-up process.

She said it can take months from when a client orders a new system until it's operating. The company is looking to speed up that timeline.

"One of the things that we've done is, we're ... preassembling it in the factory so when it arrives in the client location, it's cabled, the networking is all in there, the management that you need in order to deploy (your) work load, to manage your physical resources, it's all in there," she said. "Suddenly instead of months ... they're ready to go in just a few hours. Simplification of information technology is an important problem that we're solving with this offering," she added.

The product was the result of $2 billion spent in research and development as well as acquisitions in four years, according to the release.

Employees at the Research Triangle Park location played a "pretty significant role" in the project, Dudek said.

The project was developed across 37 different labs at IBM worldwide, but it was led from the park.

Between 2,000 and 3,000 engineers across the system and technology group and software group businesses worked on the project, and almost 1,000 were in the park.

Steve Eisenstadt, manager of external relations for IBM's Systems and Technology Group, said that in addition to the almost 1,000 employees working on the project -- out of more than 10,000 people at the park location -- 33 new patents originated from the location related to the project.

Dudek said the products are expected to start shipping later this quarter. Eisenstadt said the PureSystems are priced at $160,000 each.
