Eight-run fourth lifts Pontotoc Warriors

ECRU, Apr 08, 2012 (Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Pontotoc chipped and chipped, then exploded in the fourth inning of a 13-6 win against cross-county rival North Pontotoc on Saturday at Zane Hale Field.

"Every time we play these guys, and South too...it's a playoff-type atmosphere," Pontotoc coach Phil Webb said. "We put some hits together but they were a swing away from making it a 13-10 game." The Warriors (17-4) scored a run in each of the first three innings before sending 13 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs in the fourth.

Tied at 3, an error gave way for Hayden Cummings and Zach Gory's back-to-back two-run doubles and Blake Davis' two-run single. Gory had another RBI double in the fifth and Landon Tutor an RBI groundout in the sixth.

North Pontotoc ended the game with the bases loaded as Hayden Kennedy came in to get the final out for the Warriors.

"We've had a real big rivalry with these guys since last year when they beat us twice pretty good," Cummings said. "We were kind of coming around and it finally unleashed on them." Pontotoc took a 2-1 lead on Brock Tutor's solo home run and 3-1 on Gory's fielder's choice.

Something to build on Gory was 3 for 4 with four RBI. The Warriors had 13 hits in the win, three from Ethan Gill.

"This is something big to build on. We didn't have a good week with the bats last week, lost two division games and our goal was to come out here, put up some runs and get double-digit hits," Webb said.

North tied the score in the third as Trey Jolley and Miciah Heard scored on a botched pickoff. The Vikings (9-10) scored its finals runs on RBI singles from MacKenzie McKnight and Nate Mounce and a bases-loaded walk.

Reid Tackett pitched two innings for the win. Freshman Caleb Nelson took the loss for the Vikings but drew credit from his coach for a solid early showing in his first start.

"We knew coming in they've got a good hitting team. That's kind of been the story of our last couple of weeks, the one big inning monster has been getting us," North Pontotoc coach Chad Anthony said.

Next up, Pontotoc plays two against Amory in Division 1-4A. The Vikings face two against Senatobia in Division 2-4A.
