Johnnie St. Vrain: If phone number is listed, it's probably in the book

Apr 06, 2012 (Daily Times-Call - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Dear Johnnie: Since the phone company does not keep up with a current white pages directory, it is difficult to find the phone number of an individual.

On the Internet you can find sites that provide numbers for a significant fee. Others will give the person's address and age but no number. Is there any place you can go, provide a name and city or state and get a number without paying? -- Isolated Dear Isolated: I checked the phone book.

I found your address and phone number there. I found mine, too.

Then I wondered, shouldn't that phone book be online? So, I went to dexknows.whitepages.com. I found me. I found you. I found lots of people I know. Name, address, phone number, members of household. In fact, I found more than you usually find in the paper version.

But because I, too, have noticed that phone numbers seem to be harder to come by in general, I decided to call the phone book people. I found their number online.

Chris Hardman, the director of communications for Dex, answered.

Being a spokesman, he sent me the official company answer: "All the business and residential white pages listings provided to us by the phone companies that use Dex One as their official publisher are available at no charge in Dex print directories and online at http://dexknows.whitepages.com/.

"It may be difficult to find individual listings because of privacy concerns of the numbers' owners. Many people have requested unlisted home numbers from phone companies and others use only mobile phones. Both groups selectively share their numbers." I already had figured that second part might be true. Many people want to protect their identities; many more than that use cellphones.

Isolated, if you are willing to wait a month, a new edition of the Longmont Dex print directory will be delivered, beginning in May.
