Architect to study costs to move 911 call center to Union Gap

Apr 06, 2012 (Yakima Herald-Republic - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- YAKIMA, Wash. -- An architect will develop a cost estimate for moving the 911 emergency call center in downtown Yakima to the county's empty Union Gap jail near the Valley Mall.

Directors responsible for administration and operation of the center Thursday authorized Director Wayne Wantland to spend $6,000 to prepare a preliminary design and cost estimate.

The center currently is in cramped quarters at the city of Yakima's Richard A. Zais Jr. Center for Law and Justice on South Third Street. The center, in addition to 911 emergency call takers, also includes Upper Valley police and fire dispatch.

Architects Rasmussen Triebelhorn will perform the work. The same Tacoma firm designed the minimum-security jail in what originally was a bowling alley at 2403 S. 18th St. The 160-bed jail, opened in 2000, is now vacant, having closed in 2007 when the new county jail on Pacific Avenue opened.

Wantland said remodeling an existing building for his staff of 31 makes sense. What he needs, he added, is a better estimate of the cost.

"We are just getting into this. There has been a lot of talk and some excitement," Wantland said. "We have to see the final number and see if it is still feasible." The building already has an emergency generator and communications to support 911.

Wantland has a reserve of more than $600,000 to pay for a move. The money is from the tax on telephones to support 911.

Yakima County wants to see the building occupied and is preparing to move Washington State University Cooperative Extension and the county Office of Emergency Management to the site, known as the Yakima County Community Restitution Center.

County Public Services Director Vern Redifer said he will ask county commissioners Tuesday to authorize remodeling costs for those two agencies. The move could be accomplished by July, he said.
