Southside Speedway opens season today

Apr 01, 2012 (Richmond Times-Dispatch - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Friday nights will be amped up for the next four months as Southside Speedway will roar to life for the start on the 2012 season today at 3 p.m.

"We are really excited," marketing director Chris Stefi said. "Should be a good car count and we hope everyone has everything together for the start of the season." One change for Southside this season will be the schedule. The races are scheduled for every other week now, instead of every week as in previous years.

The dates between races will be used as rain dates.

"We are running a full schedule, just running every other week," Stefi said. "We know in today's economy, people can't afford to come out every Friday night. With running every other week, we hope they narrow their choices down to Southside." The Late Model series will be run on every program at Southside this season, with Jeff Oakley looking to defend his championship from a year ago.

Veterans Chris Dodson, Chris Johnson and Raymond Pittman will be back in Late Models as well.

"We do have some new guys coming in on the rookie side of things," Stefi said. "We have a lot of the veterans coming back as well." Stefi said the Modified division has had increased car entries after lower numbers the past season or two. The Grand Stock division also will see increased car count.

Also, there will be some youth coming into the U-Car events.

"There's at least three 14-year-old kids coming out of go-karts to run in the U-Car events," he said. "That's what the U-Cars are for. It's a good starter division." The U-Cars have four-cylinder engines, which Stefi says provides a good amount of power for their age.

"We've never had three 14-year-olds driving all at one time," he said.

Those 14-year-olds will be part of the opening-day bill for Southside, running a 25-lap event. Champ Karts will run a 20-lap race, Legends will run two 20-lap segments, leading up to the J.M. Wilkinson Memorial 150 Late Model race.

Stefi said that the military and fan appreciation nights will be back this season.

Tickets are $12 for adults, seniors and military are $10, kids 6-12 are $6 and 5 and under are free.

Southside will begin the normal Friday night racing on April 13. That card will feature Late Models, Modifieds, Grand Stock, U-Car and Street Stock divisions.
