Pregnant homicide victim tried to comfort daughter, video shows

Mar 30, 2012 (The York Dispatch - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- As Olga Vascones-Garcia began to bleed to death in the lobby of the Super 8 motel in Manchester Township, she tried to comfort her young daughter. The 5-year-old witnessed her father fatally stab her pregnant mother, court documents allege.

Security video from the motel shows Vascones-Garcia put her arm around her daughter, according to charging documents filed against alleged killer Wilkins Gerard Marte-Escano.

Marte-Escano, 28, most recently of the 700 block of South Court Avenue in York City, is charged with Thursday afternoon's homicide of his 24-year-old girlfriend, who was estimated to be about 19 weeks pregnant. He is also charged with the homicide of the pre-term infant boy, who York Hospital staff delivered but were unable to save, documents state.

Vascones-Garcia suffered two stab wounds to the chest, according to Northern York County Regional Police.

After being stabbed the first time, she and her daughter ran to the lobby of the motel, where the hotel manager called 911, police said.

Motel security video shows Vascones-Garcia rang the bell at the lobby's front desk, and that there appeared to be blood on her upper right chest or shoulder area, documents state.

The allegations: Those documents allege: Vascones-Garcia looked to her right, then backed away as Marte-Escano came into view on the video with what appears to be a knife in his hand. She fled the lobby, but he quickly followed her.

Their daughter remained in the lobby, looking outside through a glass door.

The video shows Vascones-Garcia returned to the lobby, with blood coming from the left side of her chest as well. Marte-Escano followed her back inside and appeared to use his pants to wipe blood off the knife. He then quickly left the motel.

At that point, Vascones-Garcia began pounding on the front-desk bell. The motel manager can be seen on the video picking up the phone and calling 911.

Vascones-Garcia stepped away from the front desk, staggered and fell down.

What girl saw: The 5-year-old girl told officers she saw her father stab her mother, charging documents state.

Inside Room 227, where the couple were staying, officers found a passport from the Dominican Republic that belongs to Marte-Escano, documents state.

Marte-Escano turned himself in to York City Police about 11 p.m. Thursday, according to Northern Regional Lt. David Lash.

Marte-Escano and Vascones-Garcia rented the motel room on Wednesday, after moving out of their former home, according to police.

Friday's autopsies on Vascones-Garcia and the baby boy are expected to determine whether the infant was alive after emergency delivery, as well as how many weeks pregnant the mother was, officials said.

Paternity issue: Marte-Escano and Vascones-Garcia were arguing at the motel over their daughter's paternity, York County District Attorney Tom Kearney confirmed.

Marte-Escano may also have had concerns over the paternity of Vascones-Garcia's unborn child, he said, but those facts are still being sorted out.

"It was real hard to get out of him the 'why' (of the crime)," Kearney said. "There were some things he talked about and some things he chose not to talk about. ... My impression was that he was under a lot of emotional pressure at the time." But Kearney said the interview with the alleged killer determined the paternity question "was a concern of his." Marte-Escano confessed to the stabbing, Kearney said.
