Vallejo to be Digital Bookmobile's first stop in Bay Area

Mar 28, 2012 (Times-Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Vallejo's John F. Kennedy Library becomes the Digital Bookmobile's first Bay Area stop on Friday, April 6, an organizer's spokesman said.

The Digital Bookmobile National Tour showcases the free eBook and audiobook download services from Bay Area public libraries including Vallejo's.

It will be in the Bay Area between April 6 and 26. The free Vallejo event is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 6, at 505 Santa Clara St.

"The Bookmobile is on tour throughout the U.S, and is now in the Las Vegas area," OverDrive, Inc. spokesman Mike Lovett said. "Vallejo will be first in our sweep through the Bay Area." OverDrive, which powers download websites at more than 18,000 libraries worldwide, is conducting the tour.

Though the tour has been ongoing since 2008, this will be its first time in Solano County, Solano County Public Library spokeswoman Ann Miller said.

"I'm really excited and I've seen some pictures," Miller said. "Lots of gadgets for people to play with and really get familiar with this technology." The Digital Bookmobile, a high-tech update of the traditional bookmobile that has served communities for decades, is inside a 74-foot, 18-wheel tractor-trailer, Lovett said.

The vehicle is equipped with broadband Internet-connected PCs, high definition monitors, premium sound systems and a variety of portable media players, to help visitors explore their libraries' download service, he said.

Interactive learning stations give visitors an opportunity to search the library's digital media collection, use supported mobile devices, and sample eBooks, audiobooks, music, and video, he said.

The downloadable material "is a free service for library patrons that's increasing in popularity worldwide," Lovett said.

All Solano County libraries use the service, Miller said.

During the free Vallejo event, participants will learn through interactive demonstrations how to download free eBooks, audiobooks, music and video for iPad, iPhone, Android, NOOK, Sony Reader and Kindle from the library, Lovett said.

Library card holders can check out and download digital titles anytime, anywhere by visiting their library's 'Virtual Branch' website. Visit http://search.overdrive.com or digitalbookmobile.com for more information.
