BRIEF: Copper theft cuts phone service to Devore area

Mar 23, 2012 (San Bernardino County Sun - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- DEVORE- A copper thief has disabled telephone service in the Devore area, including the county animal shelter, which could take until next week to fix, according to San Bernardino County officials.

Jarryd Gonzales, spokesman for Verizon confirmed that it was one of their cables that was stolen. The thieves made off with 300 feet of copper cable.

That particular cable was on Institution Road, Gonzales said.

The theft occurred early Friday morning, and Verizon crews were on scene working to replace the cable and restore service, Gonzales said.

Gonzales was not sure if other services such as Internet were also affected by the theft.

The Devore animal shelter is one of a few shelters in California open for pet adoptions seven days a week.

The shelter will observe its normal operating hours throughout the weekend, despite phone lines being out.

Anyone needing to reach the shelter this weekend is asked to call 1-800-472-5609.

The Devore shelter is at 19777 Shelter Way. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Reach Joe via email, call him at 909-386-3874, or find him on Twitter @SBCountyNow.
