Douglas PUD to get new mapping system

Mar 23, 2012 (The Wenatchee World - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- EAST WENATCHEE -- The Douglas County PUD is in the midst of a $621,000 software upgrade that will improve tracking of PUD lands, inventory and equipment in use in the field.

PUD spokeswoman Meaghan Vibbert said Thursday that the "Geographical Information System" will give distribution and engineering staffers an instant look at transformers in the field and the sectors they serve, as well as poles, wire and other equipment in use and whether they're charged or uncharged. It will also track fiber-optics network equipment.

The system ties in to existing inventory, making it easier to plan needs for new build outs, she said.

Using aerial photographs entered into the system, the same software will help the PUD's Land and Natural Resources departments better track erosion and encroachments from adjacent property owners around the reservoir of Wells Dam, Vibbert said.

This new system will replace a collection of old programs that are becoming harder to support, she said.

"The thought is to have a comprehensive platform that all departments can use," Vibbert said. "It will be a more comprehensive approach, as opposed to a piecemeal approach." SSP Innovations of Englewood, Colo., won a bid to provide and install the software and train PUD personnel.

PUD officials are entering data into the new system now, Vibbert said. It's planned to go live in the distribution and engineering departments this summer.

The entire system should be up and running by July 2013, Vibbert said.

"It touches a lot of different areas in the district," she said. "People are eager to get their hands on it."
