U.S. CIO Steven VanRoekel to Keynote FOSE 2012

VIENNA, Va. --(Business Wire)--

U.S. Chief Information Officer (CIO) Steven VanRoekel is responsible for managing innovative initiatives and is at the center of government information technology (IT) reforms. Mr. VanRoekel will highlight some of these initiatives and priorities, as well as his plans to maximize IT investments during his keynote presentation at FOSE 2012. The event will take place April 3-5, 2012 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.

As one of the top technology decision-makers within the federal government, Mr. VanRoekel is spearheading several initiatives, including the release of the federal mobility strategy, which includes developing an application (apps) strategy and identifying structural challenges in broadband. He is also updating the IT Dashboard to include IT investment information that supports the President's FY 2013 Budget.

Mr. VanRoekel has outlined a number of top priorities for 2012 and beyond, including:

- Shared First - Construct a mobile technologies and services portfolio so common services among agencies and public developers can be shared
- uture First - Change the way government procures software and sets policy

- IT ROI - Expand the TechStat model to streamline reviews of IT investment in underperforming programs at the bureau level
- People - Recruit and retain skilled personnel through the Presidential Tech Fellows Program and establish new standards for the IT Program Manager career track
- Cyber - Increase funding towards cybersecurity, including investment of $769 million to support operations in the National Cyber Security Division at the Department of Homeland Security

Steven VanRoekel is the second CIO of the United States, appointed by President Obama on August 5, 2011. Prior to his role in the White House, Mr. VanRoekel held two positions in the Obama Administration: Executive Director of Citizen and Organizational Engagement at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Managing Director of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC (News - Alert)). At the FCC, Mr. VanRoekel oversaw all operational, technical, financial and human resource aspects of the agency. He also led the FCC's efforts to introduce new technology and social media into the agency. Prior to joining government in 2009, Mr. VanRoekel spent his entire career at Microsoft (News - Alert) Corporation, including a stint as Speech and Strategy Assistant to Bill Gates, the corporation's co-founder, and most recently as Senior Director of the Windows Server division.
