Mexico's Telmex inks deal to launch ultra-fast broadband network

Mexico City, Feb 11, 2012 (EFE via COMTEX) -- Telmex, controlled by Mexican telecoms magnate Carlos Slim, signed a deal with Franco-American firm Alcatel-Lucent for the launch of "one of Latin America's largest and fastest broadband access networks," the Mexican fixed-line giant said.

The rollout of the network will "meet growing demand (in Mexico) for connectivity, super high-speed Internet and high-bandwidth applications such as video-on-demand, entertainment, social networks and other services," Telmex said in a press release.

The Mexican company said it chose Alcatel-Lucent as a key supplier for the deployment of a "superfast broadband access network" based on very-high-speed digital subscriber line 2, or VDSL2, and gigabit passive optical network, or GPON, technologies.

VDSL2 is a technology that boosts the capacity of traditional copper wire, enabling it to deliver broadband speeds of 100 megabits per second, while GPON is an advanced network architecture that enables a single optical fiber to serve multiple premises.

Telmex said it is seeking to deliver increased benefits for end users, including higher speeds, increases in available bandwidth and access to a wide variety of multimedia content.

"With our advanced broadband access technologies, the new network will allow Telmex to reliably move huge amounts of traffic and multimedia content to remote areas, with better quality signals, ultra high speeds of up to 100 megabits per second per subscriber and substantial savings in maintenance costs," Pierre Chaume, CEO of Alcatel-Lucent in Mexico, said.

Telmex, whose 100,000-kilometer (62,140-mile) fiber-optic network is Mexico's largest, ended 2011 as the country's main Internet and fixed-line telephony provider with 7.9 million broadband subscribers and 14.8 million fixed telephone lines in operation.

Mexican telecoms regulators thus far have denied Telmex entry into the pay TV market, preventing the company from offering a so-called "quadruple-play" package of fixed and mobile telephony, television and Internet. EFE pem/mc
