BRIEF: Repairman accused of stealing jewelry from 2 county homes

ATHENS, Jan 27, 2012 (The News Courier - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A telecommunications contractor sent to make repairs at two Limestone County homes is facing felony theft charges in connection with missing jewelry, an official said Thursday.

Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely said his deputies on Wednesday arrested James Ivan Stokes, 34, of 3015 East 10th Ave. in Sheffield, on one count of first-degree theft and one count of second-degree theft.

"He is employed by a telecommunications company as a contractor and he had been at both locations on repair calls and the owners found some jewelry missing that we determined had been sold in Athens and Florence," Blakely said. "He was at both residences and that is who the owners suspected." Stokes is accused of stealing jewelry from a home on Strain Road on Jan. 23 and from a home on Clearmont Drove in Elkmont on Jan. 24, the sheriff said. Blakely declined to name the telecommunication company for which Stokes worked.

The accused was released from the Limestone County Jail after posting a $7,500 bail.
