Comcast 3Q earnings up 5 percentNEW YORK (AP) _ Comcast Corp., the nation's biggest cable television company and Internet service provider, continues to be "The Big Engine That Could," with growth outstripping that of other cable companies. On Wednesday, the Philadelphia-based company said its profit rose 5 percent in the third quarter. Both No. 2 Time Warner Cable Inc. and No. 5 Cablevision Systems Corp. last week posted sagging profits for the quarter, and were punished by investors.

New mobile app, ShoeBox, helps scan old photosNEW YORK (AP) _ A new smartphone app will help you transition your old paper photos into the digital age. Called ShoeBox, the free app lets you use your iPhone's camera as a photo scanner. The iPhone app launched last week. An Android version is coming soon. ShoeBox comes as social media giant Facebook is preparing to launch its new "timeline" feature.

UK: Disorder no excuse to clamp down on InternetLONDON (AP) _ Governments must not clamp down on Internet and mobile phone networks at times of social unrest, the British government said Tuesday _ weeks after suggesting police should do just that during riots. Foreign Secretary William Hague said the fact that criminals and terrorists can exploit digital networks is not "justification for states to censor their citizens." RIM says BBM Music availableTORONTO (AP) _ BlackBerry maker Research in Motion says its music-sharing application for its popular messaging service will be available for downloading in the U.S., Canada and Australia within a day. BBM Music allows BlackBerry users to select 50 songs from a catalog of millions of tracks for their personal playlists. BBM users can share songs from that list with friends who use the instant messaging service.

House votes for 5-year freeze in new cell taxesWASHINGTON (AP) _ The House on Tuesday approved a five-year freeze on any new state and local taxes imposed on cellphones and other wireless services, including wireless broadband access. The voice vote reflected a consensus that new taxes on wireless mobile services have far outpaced average sales taxes on other items and have become a deterrent to the spread of wireless broadband technology.

Facebook ownership lawsuit back before NY judgeBUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) _ A New York man's claim that he's entitled to half ownership of Facebook is again before a federal judge. Legal arguments are scheduled in Buffalo Wednesday in Paul Ceglia's lawsuit against the social network site and its founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Florida man pleads not guilty in celebrity hackingLOS ANGELES (AP) _ A Florida man pleaded not guilty Tuesday to hacking into the email accounts of celebrities such as Christina Aguilera, Mila Kunis and Scarlett Johansson, whose nude photos eventually landed on the Internet. Christopher Chaney, 35, of Jacksonville, Fla., made his first court appearance in California, where he's been indicted on 26 counts, including unauthorized access to a computer and wiretapping. If convicted, he faces up to 121 years in prison.

As Assange awaits ruling, WikiLeaks faces its fateLONDON (AP) _ As Julian Assange awaits a judge's extradition verdict, it could be WikiLeaks' very future that's at stake. Its finances under pressure and some of its biggest revelations already public, WikiLeaks may not have the strength to survive if Britain's High Court judge decides Wednesday in favor of a Swedish request to extradite Assange to face trial over rape allegations, some experts argue.

Sony headed for fourth straight year in the redTOKYO (AP) _ Sony reported a 27 billion yen ($346 million) loss for the latest quarter and downgraded its annual earnings forecast Wednesday to stay in the red for the fourth year straight, battered by the strong yen and poor sales of flat panel TVs. The Japanese electronics and entertainment conglomerate is now projecting a 90 billion yen loss ($1.2 billion) for the fiscal year through March 2012 after earlier forecasting a profit of 60 billion yen ($769 million).
