Actuate and RedMonk Business Intelligence Video Series Declares: Use Data Visualization for Discovery

SAN MATEO, Calif. --(Business Wire)--

Actuate (News - Alert) Corporation (NASDAQ:BIRT), The people behind BIRT® and the leading open source Business Intelligence (BI) vendor, today announced the launch of the first in a new series of videos filmed in partnership with James Governor, co-founder and industry analyst at RedMonk.

The video series aims to demystify Business Intelligence and its relevance to organisations and their development communities today, by taking a new look at emerging topics such as Embeddable Open Source (News - Alert), The Economics of Open Source, Converging Trends, and this first video: Data Visualisation for Discovery, in which James encourages the viewer to 'not just tell the story you already have, use data visualisations to uncover what the story actually is'.

James is co-founder of RedMonk, the open source analyst firm, which specialises in developer advocacy and analytics. Based in Shoreditch, London, he advises enterprises, start-ups and major companies such as IBM and Microsoft (News - Alert) on developer-led innovation, community and technology strategy. He is also proud to have open source non-profit organisations such as the Apache Software Foundation and the Eclipse Foundation as clients. James is co-author of the O'Reilly publication Web 2.0 Design Patterns: what architects and entrepreneurs need to know.

RedMonk makes extensive use of both open source and social media tools in its business operations - James, aka @monkchips has more than 11,500 Twitter (News - Alert) followers. Chairman of SAP's external panel for stakeholder assurance in Sustainability Strategy and Reporting for 2009 he led the creation of the GreenMonk sustainability subsidiary. "Visualization has always been a big part of the game in traditional reporting but it can go so much further. Instead of being simply something we use for static reporting, telling a story we already know - we can use it to find out what the story is," adds James.

James' BI Insights will be released over the coming weeks in the online BIRT community, BIRT Exchange, and are free to view. Visit http://www.birt-exchange.com/be/demos/resources/?articleid=23022 to watch Data Visualizations, the first in the series today.

"Being nimble and agile is paramount, something smaller companies have traditionally been better at because they collect less data and are able to acquire new tools relatively easily," says Nobby Akiha, SVP Marketing at Actuate. "Today's large organizations have more work to do than ever if they want to use their vast data stores to maintain their ability to compete. This series of videos coupled with other Actuate resources help organizations to innovate and transform by bringing them up to speed on how they can and should be embracing BI and Open Source to drive their businesses forward."
